The new Ford Bronco is a formidable vehicle. With up to 330 horsepower on tap, up to 11.6 inches of ground clearance, and a selectable four-wheel drive system with three separate modes, it’s built to go just about anywhere, with or without a road. With that in mind, we at Mike Willis Ford thought we’d take a look at the best places in the area to break in a new Bronco and really stretch its legs. Here’s our picks for the best local 4x4 spots.
Louisiana Mudfest: Colfax, LA
If you’re looking for a filthy good time, look no further than the Louisiana Mudfest. This family-owned 300 acre off-road park outside Colfax is famous for its muddy terrain and good times. Open on weekends, this is the perfect spot to test your Bronco’s mud-slinging capabilities and see how well it handles the wet stuff, then stop by the Mudcat Saloon for a cold beer. Check the website for their event schedule as they regularly hold large gatherings, concerts, and camp outs. You can even tow your boat and use the in-park boat ramp to get in some fishing on the Red River!
South Toledo Bend State Park
This state park located on the Toledo Bend State Reservoir in Anacoco has something for everyone, including the off-road crowd. Along with some of the best fishing in Louisiana on the reservoir, South Toledo Bend State Park is also the only state park in Louisiana that allows the use of off-road vehicles. In a designated area away from the quieter parts of the park lie twelve miles of rocky, hilly trails to test your Bronco’s mettle. Bring your camping and fishing gear along and you’re sure to have a great time. Keep an eye out for the bald eagles nesting in the park as well.
Catahoula Recreation Park
A bit farther afield in Sicily Island, LA sits Catahoula Recreation Park. With over 100 separate trails providing a wide variety of terrain, this is one of the only 4x4 parks in Louisiana with genuine rock crawling trails. If you’re looking for a real challenge for your Bronco, Catahoula Recreation is the perfect place to test the selectable 4WD system, and if you’ve got the seven-speed manual transmission, the amazing 94.75:1 crawler gear. They allow camping on site, so pack your tent, bring the family, and get crawling!
